Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability

The Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability is one of four Research Centers and a College for Social Sciences and Humanities established in 2022 within the Ruhr Conference, founded by the three members of the University Alliance Ruhr: Ruhr-University Bochum, Technical University Dortmund, and the University of Duisburg-Essen. The Research Center aims to understand (bio)chemical reactions, processes and products at the molecular level and combines expertise in many areas, including chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, and biotechnology, to stimulate both fundamental advances in chemistry and progress in applications with great potential for industry and sustainability.

It is closely associated with the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV - Ruhr Explores SOLVation (EXC 2033) - which was established at the end of 2012 to deepen the understanding of the interplay between solutes and solvents at the molecular level and to establish Solvation Science as a new interdisciplinary research field. In 2025, RESOLV successfully secured a further seven years of funding from the German Federal Government and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
