Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability

The Research Center Chemical Sciences and Sustainability is one of four Research Centers established in 2021 within the Ruhr Conference, founded by the three members of the University Alliance Ruhr: Ruhr-University Bochum, Technical University Dortmund, and the University of Duisburg-Essen. The Research Center aims to understand (bio)chemical reactions, processes and products at the molecular level and combines expertise in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, as well as in biotechnology, to stimulate both fundamental advances in chemistry and progress in applications with great potential for industry and sustainability. This interdisciplinary collaboration will lay the foundations for innovative, environmentally-friendly and economically competitive technological applications.

It is closely associated with the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV - Ruhr Explores SOLVation which was established at the end of 2012 to deepen the understanding of the interplay between solutes and solvents at the molecular level and to establish Solvation Science as a new interdisciplinary research field. In 2019, the second funding period saw RESOLV branch out to explore chemical processes beyond ambient conditions, thermal equilibrium and homogeneous bulk phase to advance the development of important technological applications, such as circular chemistry, energy conversion and storage, or molecular recognition.

About us

Research Alliance Ruhr - Partner Institutes

The Research Alliance Ruhr was founded in 2021 with the aim to transform the Ruhr region into one of Germany’s leading centers of research and innovation, thereby improving the educational, career and life prospects of the more than five million people in one of Europe’s largest metropolitan areas. To achieve these goals, the three partner universities Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen have established a brand new joint network to advance cutting-edge research on the global challenges of today.
